Don't Judge Me!

Or my bathroom.
Ok to lessen the shock of what I am about to oh so bravely share with you, first I am going to show you my downstairs bathroom so that you will have some nice images to retain in your mind!

I LOVE our downstairs bathroom.

Ok, now that you have seen the pretty and you are about to see the ugly, let me just try to explain myself first....

We have two bathrooms, the downstairs bathroom is the one that the guests see/use, it's the one I use.

Our upstairs bathroom is another story....it looks exactly like it did when we moved in 3 years ago. I've not taken the time to bother with it since I don't use it and guests don't see it.

However we are going to have guests staying with us during our Spring Market and to be totally honest it is a complete and total yuck fest in there. Are you ready for it? *Sigh* Here it goes.....

Random cheap laminate trim that previous people never even bothered to finish.
Really gross stick on green tile...and some sort of backer board underneath.

 Crappy drywall seams.
And this, this is above the shower. It's the only attic access we have.....but it's not large enough to fit through!
Guess what? We have well water.....that rusts REALLY bad only in the upstairs shower for some reason.
Count em up....1...2....3.....and a space for yet another but they don't have one there. That many lights for an itty bitty tiny bathroom, makes sense right? HA!

So today I decided something has to give asap.
I went in there this afternoon and got a little curious by peeling up just a bit of tile and backer board and guess what was underneath?
Hardwood flooring like the rest of the house!
So then of course, I couldn't stop. Just me and a hammer in there for about an hour till there was no trace left of the funky green tile.
I'm going to paint the floor white {I have a ton of left over white floor paint from my stairs}. I have big plans for this tiny icky bathroom!

I warned you it was bad!
I am going to redo the whole bathroom using only items I already have on hand since we can't afford to go out and buy anything new, so this should be fun interesting.

This is what happens when you are poor and you don't own credit cards. Hey, maybe someone from Lowes will read this and offer me a gift card for blogging?  *Heavy sigh* probably no such luck.

Stay tuned!

  1. You're a brave woman and I commend you for pulling up that floor! It's going to look great after you paint it white. Your other bathroom is adorable, and this one will soon look just as cute!

  2. If you have rust "only" in that room, it may be the pipes (yipes, did I just say that? does it mean you have to replace them?) hope not. [I know that we have dry/wet rot under the bathroom flooring here, it is just a matter of time before someone falls through or something comes up from under there.] I think the new look will be great and just a white shower liner would look good for the shower area.

  4. Stay motivated! You are off to a great start :)
I agree with Helen about the pipes. The water on my main floor is fine, but upstairs the water tastes funny (My house is 100+ years old). How much time do you have to get this done?

  7. Wow! way to go pulling up that floor. It will look great painted white. In fact a little White paint (or a lot in your case) will do a wonderful job of covering all the yuck.
It will look great! You can do it. I am just like you...no money, no credit. I think that can bring out the creativity in almost any home owner wanting to make improvements. Pat

  8. Bless you for sharing this. LOL But do not fret, some of us (like me, hint hint) have bathrooms just as bad. One is a project my husband has been promising we would get around to for TEN years. Yay you for finding beautiful hardwood. The painted white floor will look amazing. You gonna put down a sealer?

  11. I have every confidence in you that you will work your magic in this bathroom too! I suspect that the orange iron staining may not be just from the well water but from the pipes as well .... If I had Lowes here I would send you a gift card, but I don't so I can't. You are most deserving of one - you are so talented. Patty/BC

  12. That bathroom is ALMOST as bad as the one I have upstairs. How lucky to find the wide plank boards under the floor tiles! Can't wait to see how you transform this room and maybe I'll catch the inspiration and do mine! ~ Maureen

  13. What is it with ugly bathrooms (no offense intended) and lights? I have an ugly bathroom and just like you, I have four lights in that tiniest room whose ceiling is so low! I really don't understand what the previous owners did. Your downstair bathroom is so pretty, I can't wait to see what you'll do with the "ugly bathroom"!

  15. The Works Tub and Shower Cleaner works miracles on rust stains - and you can get it cheap (my dollar store carries it). I had rusty well water at my last place and this was the only thing I could find to clean it. Buy several bottles to start... you just squirt it on and rinse it off... little or no scrubbing required. And be glad you have one gorgeous bathroom- our house only has one and it's a mess ... and no $ to redo it right now either. Having a baby in spring and our bath only has a shower.. not sure how I'm gonna bathe baby once it outgrows the kitchen sink and baby bathtubs.

  16. Erin is right! I live in the country and have the mineral rust crap to. I use the work toilet bowl cleaner. I couldn't get that yuck off with the tub and shower cleaner. Now my bathroom sparkles. We have a one piece shower and tub unit that is basically hard plastic and the toilet bowl cleaner doesnt hurt it at all. It will smell bad but it does the trick! BTW Love your blog. I am in the exact same postition that you are with the funds.

  18. What a fun project! Luv that you uncovered the hardwood floor and are planning to paint it. Can I suggest painting a "rug" on it while you're at it? It's a powerful design accent in a small space!
I've become a master of "shoe-string" projects, and cAN't wAIt to see what sources and solutions you come up with!
