I've been wanting an old spoon ring for awhile now. But I am just way too cheap to order one online. So I took the money I would have spent and bought a metal stamping kit from Michaels. {yes yes, I used my discount card AND a coupon....you did get the part where I said I am cheap right?}
Anyways so I have this ridiculous stash of vintage silver plate and plenty of hand tools so I just went to town hacking away at this poor spoon. I used some heavy gauge wire snips, pliers, and a hammer and that was pretty much it.
You can see the tool marks mainly because I really had no idea what I was doing the first time around.
Then I was stuck with the bottom of the spoon and not wanting to be wasteful used it as a practice piece for my metal stamping kit.
{Note to self~when trying out a craft you have never done before, it's generally not a great idea to do it outside in the dark.....just sayin}
At any rate, I learned a bit of what to do and what not to do, so tomorrow I am setting out to make some garden markers!

ReplyDeleteOh my Goodness.... I use to have a Spoon Ring back when I was in high school... Now you've got me wondering what in the world I did with it... :) Well, if I don't find it I guess I will have to do what you did... Make another one.. :)
ReplyDeletei would love to win that beautiful gift wrap and thank you for the chance to do so. I follow your blog and enjoy it a lot joy brow
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to drill thru flatware for a project, using my Dremel Tools, with no luck. Have any suggestions? Also what worked best to 'bend' the ring into shape.
ReplyDeleteYou just need a better or stronger dremel drill bit. I make silverware jewelry and had the same problem. To bend the ring, use a metal pipe, socket or ring mandrel. Put the piece you cut off next to the mandrel and put both in a vise. I use a hammer with leather taped on it to bend the ring around the mandrel or whatever you are using.
DeleteI am the same way to cheap to buy one I thought you had to have heat to bend them but well I see you did it so I know I can try my hand at it I love it and I also have an entire old plastic ice cream bucket full of silverware that was my grandmothers so plenty to practice with thank u for sharing! Hugs from Ohio
